ITSLIQUID on the End of the Grip Sock
What happens when an art and design platform looks closely at a barre shoe
ITSLIQUID usually writes about art, architecture and design. So when it turned its attention to Barreletics, it was worth asking what it saw.

Luca Curci founded ITSLIQUID in 2001 with a simple idea: creative work does not have to stay in one lane. Art, architecture, fashion and design could share the same conversation. Over twenty years that idea grew into exhibitions, events and collaborations around the world, and into what ITSLIQUID now calls a cultural hub for creatives and the spaces that show their work.
A platform like that is not looking for workout gear. It is looking for objects that started with a question.
Questioning something everyone else accepted
Founder Stefanie Miller's question came from her own barre practice. The classes kept evolving, the equipment kept getting better, and the movement kept getting more precise. Yet nearly everyone was still standing in the same thing: a fabric sock with grip added underneath.
She noticed the sock never really gripped the floor, and her foot still slid around inside it, like wearing something two sizes too big. Barreletics calls that the Double Failure. Once she saw it, adding more grip to a sock stopped looking like the answer. The better question was whether the sock belonged there at all.
That question became Performance Skin. She tells the story in her own words in Why I Created the Best Barre Shoe on the Planet and My Quest to Create the Best Barre Sock.
Where the design comes from
This is the part ITSLIQUID responds to. Performance Skin was not styled to look different. It looks different because it was built differently.
Instead of starting with fabric and adding grip, Barreletics engineered 360° grip into the material itself. Left and right forms follow the shape of the foot. The topline is sculpted to sit close, like a second skin. And the toes stay free, because natural movement is part of the point.
It is not quite a sock and not quite a shoe. Its shape is simply what the problem asked for.
Never loses shape. Never loses grip.
Open Sole is the most minimal version, leaving the heel and toes free. Closed Sole covers the bottom of the foot and keeps the toes free. Both have the same grip, and both are designed and manufactured in Michigan, USA. No latex. No silicone.
Made for a long practice
For a lot of people, barre and Pilates are not a phase. They are something you return to for years, for strength, balance and control. What you stand in should hold up to that.

When you are not thinking about your footing, you can think about the movement. And some pairs go a long way. One customer's pair reached roughly 1,000 studio classes. That is one person's experience, not a promise, but it shows what the design was built for.
Why it fits ITSLIQUID
Curci built ITSLIQUID around work that starts in one world and ends up mattering in another. Performance Skin began at the barre, but the thinking behind it, questioning a familiar object until a better form appears, travels well beyond the studio.
You can read the original ITSLIQUID feature on Barreletics.
A grip sock starts with a sock and adds traction. Performance Skin started with the foot.
