THE BARRELETICS STORY

Patented Performance Skins® for Barre, Pilates, Reformer Pilates, Megaformer Workouts, Yoga & Studio Fitness.
How it all began
By Stefanie Miller, Founder

Filling a Void for Barre, Pilates & Yoga

At the time, grippy yoga socks were the only tool available. Instead of supporting my workout, they consistently disrupted it. They slipped when grip mattered most, required constant adjusting mid-exercise, and never delivered the control they promised.

I found myself breaking focus to fix my socks instead of holding positions, sliding out of side planks, resetting my feet, and losing stability where it mattered most.

Over time, they also trapped sweat and felt like bacteria magnets — uncomfortable, unsanitary, and completely misaligned with the clean, connected experience I wanted in my practice.

What seemed like a small annoyance became impossible to ignore.

I was investing time, energy, commitment, and resources into my workout without having the right tool to fully support it. If I was dedicating an hour to my practice, I wanted that hour to count. I wanted to feel secure, grounded, connected, and confident — not distracted by what was happening beneath my feet.

And I knew I was not the only one.

The Idea

One day, stuck in side plank and sliding yet again, it became clear: this was not just inconvenient. It was holding us back.

That moment sparked the question: why didn’t a better tool exist? What if there were flexible, non-slip, in-studio workout footwear with true all-over grip, something that could move from side plank to flat-back chair without slipping, shifting, or interrupting flow?

That same evening, I tore the silicone sleeve off a water bottle, cut it up, and created my very first prototype.

It was far from perfect. But it worked.

Barre, Pilates and Yoga socks. Perfomance Skins replace socks with better grip and performance than a typical workout sock. Our Pilate and Barre shoes have open toes and allow splaying for the ultimate balance. The best indoor grippy sock and shoe.
What Happened Next...

Trial and Error Led To 100% Grip All The Time

That wild idea and on-the-fly prototype became the starting point for what would eventually become Barreletics Performance Skins.

What followed was two years of trial and error, testing, redesigning, refining, and perfecting the details that mattered most: pressure points, fit, flexibility, materiality, and true all-over grip.

After countless iterations, Barreletics Performance Skins were born: patented workout footwear designed for barre, Pilates, reformer Pilates, Megaformer workouts, yoga, mat work, aquatic use, and studio fitness.

Designed and manufactured in Michigan, USA, they were built to help you feel secure, stable, and connected without getting in the way of the workout.

The Pilates Connection

A Bridge Between Original Pilates Principles and Modern Studio Fitness

Joseph Pilates developed his method, originally called Contrology, around breath, concentration, control, precision, alignment, flow, and full body awareness.

He also created apparatus to support that method, including the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Foot Corrector, Toe Corrector, and Ped O Pul.

The feet were always part of the system. In Pilates, the foot connects the body to the floor, mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Megaformer, and every piece of equipment beneath you. That connection matters.

Over time, socks became the standard in many studios for hygiene and studio rules. But a sock alone does not make a practice clean. Traditional fabric socks can still absorb sweat, hold moisture, and carry bacteria back onto the mat or machine. Clean feet, clean floors, clean mats, wiped down equipment, and a consistent studio process are what actually create a clean environment.

The tool beneath you should support the practice, not compromise it.

Why the Foot Connection Matters

Pilates depends on feedback. The foot has to sense, press, articulate, stabilize, and respond.

A traditional grip sock that slips, shifts, bunches, or traps moisture can dull the connection between the foot and the work. When that happens, your focus moves away from form, strength, breath, and control and toward correcting your footing.

It is like trying to hold a plank while a towel is sliding under your foot. You can still do the move, but your body is compensating instead of fully engaging.

That is the part I believe Joseph Pilates, and any serious barre or Pilates practitioner, would understand immediately. A practice built on control, precision, stability, and connection should not be compromised by what is happening beneath your feet.

And while socks became common in studios for hygiene and studio rules, a sock alone does not make a practice clean. Traditional fabric socks can still absorb sweat, hold moisture, and carry bacteria back onto the mat or machine. Clean feet, clean floors, clean mats, wiped down equipment, and a consistent studio process are what actually create a clean environment.

For anyone who prefers a sock layer, has cold feet, or attends a studio that requires socks, Performance Skins can be worn with a very thin sock underneath. We recommend the thinnest option possible, ideally toe free or fitted, so you still feel the grip, stability, and connection Barreletics was designed to create.

The Pilates sock era is over. A better way to grip is here.

Life Inspiration

My former career as a fashion model took me around the world, where I developed a deep appreciation for design, textiles, architecture, craftsmanship, innovation, and the details that elevate an experience.

That foundation in fashion now meets my passion for fitness, wellness, self-care, and living an active, healthy lifestyle.

Every pair of Barreletics is intentionally designed and crafted with care, not just to perform at the highest level, but to support how you move, feel, and show up.

I hope you love them as much as I do.
